What are some good targets to target during a safety stop?
We have several digital cameras available for free rental to our guests every day, and this goby fish always makes it to the top of the subject rankings!
Of course, the top spot is taken by a long way by clownfish, but I think that the gorilla family, including the spectacled gorilla, starry gorilla, spherical gorilla, southern gorilla, etc., would also come in second place!
The reason is that they live in a wide range of areas, from shallow to deep waters, so you're sure to encounter them at any spot, and unlike species that swim around and are difficult to photograph, they sit on corals and rocks, and if you approach them quietly while they're still, you can get quite close! Many people take photos of them during safety stops before exiting, but you can be sure to find them anywhere in shallow waters!
So, first look for brightly colored corals, sponges, and soft corals that would make a beautiful background, then find the gorilla, then lure it to that beautiful spot, take aim, and then [click!]
Tips for capturing your subject
It may be difficult at first to carry out the above steps within the three minutes of a safety stop. In fact, it may not be something you can do right away. But! By repeatedly trying, you will definitely begin to see how the fish moves, the distance at which they will not escape, and their behavioral patterns! Once you get that far, the goal is just around the corner.
Since there's always a safety stop and the people you see are usually the same, it might be fun to narrow down your target and keep trying until you're satisfied. It might also be a good idea to ask your guide to find your favorite subject! Just tell your guide what you like.
It's only three minutes. But it's still three minutes.
