■What is a diving knife?
A diving knife is an essential tool when diving underwater.
Many people don't use it on a regular basis, so they probably just carry it with them, but not having it with you in an emergency could cost you your life.
The knives are made from rust-resistant materials such as stainless steel and titanium.
In recent years, various manufacturers have been releasing materials that are even more rust-resistant, so it's a good idea to check them out.
The handle is more buoyant than the blade, and was designed to make it easier to maintain buoyancy in the Middle Ages.
Choosing the right knife is important because the shape of the blade determines the purpose of use.
■ Correct wearing position
The correct position to wear the knife is on the inside of your knee on your dominant side.
For example, if you are right-handed, wear it on the inside of your right knee.
If you simply put it on, the end of the handle may hit your knees and get in the way, so please adjust it as necessary.
When you hear that the correct position for wearing the mask is on the inside, some people think that it would be easier to put it on and take it off on the outside, but it is actually surprisingly difficult.
Let's say your right hand is dominant and you wear it on the outside of your right knee.
There's no problem if your right hand is free, but what if you find yourself in a situation where you can't move your right hand underwater?
You probably can't reach the knife with your left hand.
On the other hand, if you wear it on the inside, you can pull out the knife with either your right or left hand in the event of an emergency.
If you're skilled, you might be able to pull out the knife with your other hand even if you attach it to the outside, but then the problem arises of whether you can store it away.
As a result, wearing the mask on the outside puts strain on the diver's body, so it is best to wear it on the inside.
■ How to use a knife
The knife is used in emergencies underwater.
There are two main situations in which it is used:
・Unable to move in the water
It is used when you get caught on seaweed or fishing line and are unable to move.
It is rare for you to be unable to move, but it is not impossible.
In this situation, you can escape by cutting the obstacle blocking your movement with a knife.
If you become stuck in the water, the most important thing is to stay calm.
Panicking increases the risk of injury, so first stay calm and check what you are tangled up in.
Use it as a means of communication
Another use is as a means of communication with your buddy.
If something unexpected happens underwater, others may not notice.
If you think your buddy won't come to your rescue, hit the tank with your knife.
The clanging sound will surely attract them to come closer.
In most cases, if you are unable to move, the tank valve is the cause, so have a buddy check the parts of your back that are not visible.
■ It is also important to check before use
Before diving, check the condition of your knife.
Carefully check to see if it can be attached and detached smoothly and if there is any rust on it.
If there is any damage or abnormality, have it repaired or replaced to keep it in proper condition.
A diving knife is a must-have tool to have with you when underwater.
Use it in emergencies, such as when you are stuck, to cut through obstacles or call a buddy for help.
